A Comprehensive Breakdown of What ‘The Commercial UAV Show 2016’ Had to Offer Search and Rescue – Part 7

POTENTIAL COMBINED SOLUTIONS WITH EXAMPLE USES:

Please note: the technical term for drones – ‘unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)’ – will be used throughout this blog post.

This section aims to put into context the products that have been evaluated throughout the previous sections. It suggests solutions to known search and rescue (SAR) operational needs by using only the technology that was available at The Commercial UAV Show 2016 in London and that has been analysed within this research piece.

Please note: the weather capabilities for each solution have been defined by the component with the lowest capability – all components of a system need to work within the specified weather capabilities.

POTENTIAL COMBINED SOLUTION NO.1:

solution-1

Products: AirMast Tethered Drone System + DJI S900 / WIRIS 640 / Magnum / AeryonLive Video & Telemetry

End-user: Police Forces

Incident Example: Event Surveillance

Total Cost: £53,978.27 (excluding Magnum cost as unattainable) (+£950 a month for AeryonLive Video & Telemetry)

Total Weight: 13.7Kg (excluding the AeryonLive GoBox and Magnum as weights were unattainable) (a generator’s weight should also be factored into this)

Weather Capabilities of Solution:

  • Maximum wind tolerance = 27mph
  • Operational temperature range = 0oC to +40oC
  • Humidity = 5% to 95%
  • Water resistance = light rainproof

Description: This combined solution for this incident example gives Police forces the ability to monitor the entire length of an event, during both day and night. Not only that but the live video from the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) can be streamed to a control room with just a mere 10-second delay behind real-time. It is also a redundant system for increased safety. Furthermore, the WIRIS 640 component allows the Police force to know the exact GPS coordinates of the people they are monitoring.

POTENTIAL COMBINED SOLUTION NO.2:

solution-2

Products: Typhoon H PRO RS / CGO-ET Thermal

End-user: Flood Rescue Teams

Incident Example: Situational Awareness at Night for Tactics

Total Cost: £4,999

Total Weight: 1.53Kg (excluding CGO-ET Thermal’s weight as it was unattainable)

Weather Capabilities of Solution:

  • Maximum wind tolerance = 30mph
  • Operational temperature range = -5oC to +80oC
  • Humidity = 5% to 95%
  • Water resistance = rainproof

typhoon-cgo

Description: During an interview with Sam Bailey, the Unit Manager for Wessex Flood Rescue Unit, he explained that when his team were deployed to the floods in Cumbria in December 2015, they arrived in darkness; because of this they were unable to begin evacuating persons from their houses until the following day due to a non-existent situational awareness. It wasn’t until daylight that they could begin planning their tactics and sending their teams into the flooded area. This combined solution for this incident example would give flood teams the ability to gather situational awareness of a flooding event – day or night.

POTENTIAL COMBINED SOLUTION NO.3:

solution-3

Products: Flydeo Y6 / PI Lightweight

End-user: Fire and Rescue Services

Incident Example: Structure Fire

Total Cost: £10,677.42 (excluding PI Lightweight as cost was unattainable)

Total Weight: 9.38Kg

Weather Capabilities of Solution:

  • Maximum wind tolerance = 28mph
  • Operational temperature range = 0oC to +50oC
  • Humidity = 10% to 95%
  • Water resistance = rainproof

Description: Given the PI Lightweight’s high temperature effective range (up to 900oC), this combined solution for this incident example would give fire and rescue services a thorough and detailed analysis of a structure fire. Fire crews would be able to detect the hot spot and see which direction the fire is spreading. The PI Lightweight’s temperature gauge would reduce the chances of information overload by allowing the fire crew to set temperature parameters; narrowing the detection range.

POTENTIAL COMBINED SOLUTION NO.4:

solution-4

Products: SkyRanger / HDZoom30

End-user: Police Forces

Incident Example: Drugs Raid

Total Cost: £45,000

Total Weight: 3Kg

Weather Capabilities of Solution:

  • Maximum wind tolerance = 45mph (55mph gusts)
  • Operational temperature range = -30oC to +50oC
  • Humidity = 0% to 100%
  • Water resistance = heavy rainproof, salt water protected

Description: This combined solution for this incident example would allow Police forces to hover above a house high enough to be out of hearing range, yet still gather critical descriptions/evidence and track the people fleeing from the incident when entering a house during a drugs raid. Images of the perpetrators with distinguishable details will be easily obtained with this setup.
